Item upgrading allows players to increase the gear score of an item up to 700, and then add a final perk. Items can be upgraded if they're in your inventory and you bring them to the kiln.

Certain items can be upgraded to benefit from their unique stats (like perfect made breakpoint armour that can be rolled to use in melee PvP) while other items, such as weapons do not vary greatly post upgrade and thus aren't worth upgrading.

Weapons

Weapons can be upgraded to improve their numeric stats, such as damage to attack, crit chance as well as PvE and PvP damage. Weapons also come with a flat bonus that increases their damage per second. A lot of weapons also have an unaffected bonus that is activated when three or more identical weapons are used in a unit. This means that a change from a sword with 8 damage to an 11 attack-damage sword will result in a weapon receiving 3% of attack damage. The 3% does not mean that the weapon will hit three times less, since it is an absolute number.

A weapon can also be rerolled by pressing the green button with circular arrows within the item menu. The item will be rerolled and change its stats, but it won't reset the weapon's levels or bind to account status.

Armor

Adding a few upgrades to your armor could make a a huge difference in your ability to survive. Certain sets can offer MASSIVE increases in poison, curse, fire and magic resistance, making the journey through difficult terrain a breeze. The more defense your character has, the more value you can get from each point of health therefore it is important to improve your armor as much as possible.

You can upgrade your armor by visiting one of the Great Fairy Fountains. There are four in total, and each requires you to complete a unique side-quest involving the Stable Trotters musical troupe.
