Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita’s Personality

Macaws are a great companion bird. They are intelligent and affectionate. These birds are ideally suited to families with a range of members. They can easily become bored and will find ways to keep themselves entertained if their owners are not engaging with them enough often. Macaws that aren't socialized may become aggressive and even bite. It is crucial that boundaries are clearly established so that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.

Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds that love to play, interact, and climb. They need at least 2 to 3 hours each day out of their cages for physical exercise and mental stimulation. They love playing games while listening to music, and learning tricks. They also love going to parks and playgrounds while hiking, and also visiting local bars and restaurants. They are not only a wonderful pet, but they are they are also a great pet for children.

The birds can be quite loud, despite their affection for their mate. They can also be a nuisance to those who live nearby. They can be heard making high-pitched screech-calls and ear-piercing calls, which can be a nuisance in condominiums and apartments, or near young children who might be startled by their roar.

The species is also monomorphic. Males and females can be difficult to distinguish. Due to this the only way to identify sex is through DNA testing. Once the bird's sex is known and breeding can begin, breeding can commence.

Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets require training to learn commands and phrases. This is not a quick process, and it's essential that the pet's owner is patient and realizes that this is not something to be undertaken lightly. For a long time activists have been lobbying for the retirement of Lolita's tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 blockbuster film Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's reintegration back into the wild, activists and marine biologists believed that Lolita could suffer a similar fate. Sadly, she never had the chance to return to the ocean.

The people who are Lolita's captors – the Dolphin Company - have ignored veterinary advice and continue to put her in danger. They undermine her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, putting too much stress on her with high-speed circles and head-first dives that expose her to chlorine, causing her to lose weight and weakening her immune system. They also place her in a tank that is one-and-a-half times smaller her natural habitat.

Fortunately, in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as to be a family member, on a plan to eventually transport her to open water. The plan included a facility in Washington's westcoast where she could spend the remaining days, receive human care, and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen will be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and surrounded by the actual ocean and not a concrete tank.

If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive. In the wild, killer whales are social animals who connect with their family members until death. Lolita, who has lived alone at Seaquarium in isolation for 40 years, is now being released into the wild. Activists across the country, including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have demanded her departure from Seaquarium's stage and eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet

A well-fed macaw in captivity can live for up to 60 years old. This majestic bird also needs plenty of space to fly and exercise.

Lolita's Health

Despite the ongoing health issues, many are hopeful that Lolita could be closer to a life in the wild than before. The new owner of the Seaquarium has made a pledge to moving the whale out of her tank and into her natural habitat in the Pacific.

The move comes after years of public pressure and demands, including from PETA, that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into an ocean-side sanctuary where she can swim in the ocean, and possibly even be reunited with the orca thought to be her mother. Unfortunately these plans came late for the whale that was so beloved, who died on Friday of what was believed to be a kidney issue.
