WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades will give you a boosts in certain stats. Each upgrade items increases the level of the item by +3. Each upgrade also increases the random substatus.

The more modernized gear generally has a higher trade value, unless it has inherently low requirements (like the FB shield of the sorc) or very high stat variation (like the eth titan weapons). Upgrades are less useful for the latter because of the requirement to roll the perfect version.

Recycle Points

The Item level upgrade upgrader allows players to upgrade gear to a higher item level by providing the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any kind of armor or weapon. The item used to upgrade the item will be consumed and cannot be used again. Upgrades can be used to create Enchantments.

The upgrader can be found in all major cities and is accessible anytime to upgrade your gear. To keep your gear current it is recommended you visit the upgrader each few weeks.

The cost of upgrading will depend on the current item level of the gear being upgraded however, they will always be cheaper than buying new gear from other sources. For example, upgrading a chest piece from Benthic to 385 ilvl will cost 20 recycle points, while buying a similar item from a different player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used for tools, armor, weapon and accessory upgrades. They can be purchased by players from NPCs who sell upgrades for items in exchange for different currencies, and may also be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be used on any tool, weapon or armor. button, which will display an item's preview when it is upgraded when the player has enough materials.

The upgrade cost depends on the slot of the item and current item level as well as the level of the weapon, which is more than gloves or bracers, for example. Each upgrade costs 15 Flightstones and a variety of crests, with some upgrades offering discounts to reduce the cost of Flightstones or crests that are used. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain level and is degraded, it can be sold and returned to the upgrader for a lower amount of both currencies.

Upgraders for items can be found in a variety of locations, including the main island and some outposts. The NPCs offer both an upgrade coupon and a chance to obtain an entirely new recipe. The discount on upgrades increases depending on the amount of items that are being upgraded, and can be increased by having players complete specific achievements or complete quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an item upgrader at beginning unlike Cromwell from Baldur's gate II. Instead the NPCs that are available to help with upgrades require various methods which is both an improvement but also a drawback.

In Season 3 the upgrade system has been modified a bit, and numerous new features added. After a player has earned an upgrade to a particular item level for a particular armor slot, upgrading further items to that level will cost less, even in the event that they are part of an entirely different set of gear.

The amount of Valorstones required to upgrade is reduced and the discount is affixed to all accounts. The amount of Harbinger Crests needed to upgrade is cut too, but it is only available once certain milestones are reached.

Crests

For example, once a piece of equipment reaches the highest upgrade level of any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic) it will no longer require Flightstones to be upgraded. This is to allow players to get their equipment up to the highest level possible on all their characters, instead of relying on seasonal loot.

It's also crucial to choose crests in a wise manner, as they have only one purpose. For instance it's a good idea to use all of your Whelpling-rank crests with the Best item upgrader gear you have available, and then keep Drake and Wyrm crests to use for the next set of upgrades you're planning to create. This is especially true for items like trinkets and rings that occupy multiple slots on the character that will be able to take advantage of the account-wide discount when all of the slots are filled with top-quality gear.
