Choosing a Large Bedside Cot

Size

The Lora is a perfect fit for a South African cot mattress unlike many international or European brands. This means that you don't have to purchase an entirely new mattress each time your baby grows. Height

When you are choosing a cot for your bed choose one that can be raised up to a level that is comfortable for you when feeding babies. It should also be able to be lowered to the ground so that you can pull your baby towards you during night feedings or to soothe. This feature is particularly useful in the event of recovering from a C-section. The Next2me cot and the Tutti Bambini can be adjusted to a maximum height of 58cm, while the Snuzpod 3 can go up to 63cm, and the Knuma Hutch up to 70cm.

It is also important to consider the height you'd like the base of your crib to be. While some mums find it easier to lift their babies out of standard Moses baskets when they are at the lowest height, other mums prefer having a higher base that gives them more stability. One of our testers for mums stated that the Joie Roomie Glide was a popular choice. It is a collapsible side you can push at the push of one button.

Keep in mind that a bassinet or bedside sleeping device is only suitable when your baby is able to hold his head without assistance, which is usually around 6 months. This is due to the possibility of inhaling suffocation. It's also important to note that if you select a bedside or bassinet which can convert into a cot for bedside, you will need to start removing the sides when your child is able to do this, so that they don't climb out or fall out of bed.

Design

Chicco Next2me Magic is another option. It was awarded Gold in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for the best Cot, Moses Basket, or Crib. It is machine washable and comes with a interior, reflux incline, and a rocking feature. It's a bit bigger than some of the other cribs for bed we've tested but it folds flat into its travel bag, so it's relatively compact when not in use.

Leya, MFM mum home tester, also acknowledged the crib's usefulness. She claimed that it was designed for parents and infants. It is a fantastic design that is very easy to manoeuvre and it is extremely durable. Its swivelling base is fantastic as it means you can move the bassinet from side to side and one of its sides can be opened down to facilitate access especially for new mothers who are recovering from c-sections,' she said.

Safety

A large bedside cot's main security characteristic is that it is able to be raised or lowered so parents can reach their child to feed or comfort them, or change his or their nappy. This is ideal for new mothers recovering from a c-section. You should look for the design that allows you to lower the sides of the bed with a simple button press. This will allow you to easily raise your child without getting out of the bed. This is particularly important as your baby bedside sleeper grows older and more mobile. Avoid adding anything that could increase the risk of injury or suffocation, such as duvets and pillowcases that can cause your baby to overheat.

The CPSC's NPR included 24 incidents that were attributed to problems with the product, such as gaps between the bedside cot mattress sleeper and the adult bed (12 incidents) and enclosed openings with fabric sides (11 incidents) as well as consumer misassembly, or missing parts (6 incidents) and other miscellaneous product-related issues (9 incidents).

In its NPR the CPSC looked into the possibility of introducing additional requirements to bedside sleepers. For instance they would need to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets, or at least the maximum height requirements for the rail that is lowered. However, the CPSC found that these requirements would not be practical or effective in reducing the number of incidents in which infants were trapped between the bedside sleeper and the adult bed.

Many of the reported incidents in the NPR included bedside sleepers with multiple uses that can be converted to other modes such as play yards and bassinets. Many commenters suggested that CPSC include in the proposed rule an alternative provision for multiuse bedside sleepers to enable them to meet the minimum side-height requirement for bassinets using an attachment that is removable and can be permanently connected or disconnected when the product is not being used as a bassinet.

The CPSC is reviewing these comments and others received in response to the NPR on sleep at night. The Commission will consider these comments when deciding on the final rule which is expected to be released in November 2021.
