The Citroen C1 makes a great city car. It features a light and responsive steering wheel and a swift handling. It's inexpensive to purchase and run as well as insure.

The only drawback is that the car's compact footprint means that the boot space isn't the most spacious. There is a way to overcome this issue by folding the rear seats down however.

The C1's impressively large boot (for this small car) makes it an excellent option for those who want to make a lot of short journeys but who want something as easy to drive and cheap to run as superminis. A used car could be a great first car for those who only require an affordable and compact vehicle but doesn't have the money to invest in something more substantial.

You can still buy a three-year-old example for less than the price of PS2500 and then upgrade to the most recent 68PS Touch/Feel model. If you opt for the latter, you'll also get an excellent USB input for the two-speaker stereo and front windows that are electric. The highest-end Flair model is priced several hundred pounds more and comes with an integrated infotainment system for smartphones, automatic lights and wipers and air conditioning.

Although the citroen relay key is a car for city use at heart, it's no one to be feared on the open roads either and the nimble, efficient three-cylinder engine and light weight combine to make it a formidable motorway cruiser too. The key holes are prone to swell when exposed to cold temperatures. It is possible to open the key hole by spraying WD40 into it while the door is shut.
