Upgrades provide a guaranteed boost to certain stats. Each upgrade increases item level by 3. Each upgrade also boosts the random substatus.

The upgraded gear typically has a more value in trade as long as it meets low requirements (like the FB shield of the sorc) or has a high stat variance (like the eth titan weapons). Upgrades aren't as important for the latter due to the requirement to roll a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The upgrader for items allows players to upgrade gear to a higher item level by providing the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of armor or weapons. The item used to upgrade the item is discarded and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be applied to enchantments.

The upgrader is located in every major city, and can be accessed anytime to upgrade your equipment. It is recommended that you visit the upgrader once every few weeks to keep your equipment up-to-date.

Upgrades can cost more based on the item level, however they'll always be cheaper than purchasing new equipment. For instance, upgrading a Benthic chest piece to 385 levels will cost 20 recycle points, purchasing a similar piece from another player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used to upgrade weapons, armor, tools, and accessory upgrades. They are purchased by players through item upgrader NPCs in exchange for different currencies, and can also be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be applied to any tool, weapon, or armor. The button will display the item's next level of upgrade, when there are enough materials.

The cost of upgrading varies based on the slot of the item and the current item upgrader kit level. For instance weapons are more expensive than gloves, bracers, or bracers. Each step costs 15 Flightstones plus a set number of crests. Some upgrades give discounts on Flightstones. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain level it is able to be degraded and returned to the upgrader for a lesser amount of the two currency types.

Upgraders for items are available in a variety of locations on the main island, as well as a few outposts. The NPCs provide an upgrade discount as well as a chance to acquire a new upgrade recipe. The discount for upgrades increases depending on the amount of items that are being upgraded. It can also be increased by having players complete specific achievements or complete quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an item upgrader at beginning unlike Cromwell from Baldur's gate II. The NPCs who are able to facilitate upgrades are available only through a variety means. This is both a benefit and an issue.

In Season 3, several new features have been added to the upgrade system. After the player has upgraded to a specific level for an armor slot upgrading other items to the same level will cost less. This is true even if those items are from another set of gear.

The discount is available to all accounts. The amount of Harbinger Crests required to upgrade is reduced as well, but is only available after certain milestones are reached.

Crests

When it comes to upgrading gear in WoW players have a couple of choices. Flightstones are a currency that is available to all players for upgrading. Crests are more specific and are utilized during specific item upgrading level upgrade (killer deal) level upgrades. Crests are a key element of the Dragonflight gear progression system introduced in 10.1, and come in 4 ranks.

The first thing to remember is that Crests are only available to gear that is of a particular rank. Each rank comes with an upgrade path that is different. The easiest and most straightforward upgrade is 15 crests. The most complicated upgrade could require as much as 20 crests, depending on the type of equipment being upgraded.

Players can obtain crests by working through content that is of the appropriate level, which means walking around and doing outdoor activities for gear of lower tiers, raids or dungeons with all difficulties for higher-tier items, or Mythic+ dungeons or heroic raid bosses for gear that is used in the endgame. These crests can be exchanged with an upgrader for the item level upgrade, such as Cuzolth or Vaskarn in Valdrakken for the appropriate upgrade steps and routes.

Utilizing these new currencies isn't too complicated, but the system does introduce some modifications to the upgrade process. When a piece attains the highest level of upgrade item for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer) it will no longer require Flightstones. This allows players to upgrade their equipment to the highest level possible on all their characters instead of relying on seasonal loot.

Another important change is that crests only have one usage, so it's important to use them wisely. For instance it's a good idea make use of all your Whelpling-rank crests on the top equipment available and save Drake and Wyrm crests for the next batch of upgrades you plan to make. This is especially true for items like rings and trinkets that fill multiple slots on the character, that will be able to benefit from the discount for all accounts when all of the slots are full of high-quality equipment.
