WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades will give you a an increase in certain statistics. Each upgrade boosts the level of the item by +3. Each upgrade also boosts an unspecified substat.

Upgraded gear generally sees more value in trade regardless of whether it has low requirements (like the FB sorc's shield) or has a high stat variance (like eth titan weapons). Upgrades are not as useful for those with higher variance because of the requirement to roll a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader lets players upgrade their gear by giving the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be made on any type of weapon or armor. However, the item used to upgrade will be consumed forever and will not be able to be used again. Upgrades can also be applied to enchantments.

You can upgrade your equipment anytime by visiting the upgrader in any major city. It is recommended to visit the upgrader every couple of weeks to ensure that your equipment is up-to-date.

The cost of upgrading will depend on the current item level of the item being upgraded, but will always be cheaper than buying new gear from other sources. Upgrades such as upgrading a Benthic chest up to 385 ilvl will cost you 20 recycle points. Buying a similar item will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are functional items that can be used to level up weapons and tools, armor and accessories. They can be purchased by players from NPCs of item upgraders for various currencies. They can also find them in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be applied to any weapon, tool or armor. button, which will show a preview of the item at its next upgrade level if the player has sufficient materials.

The cost of upgrading varies based on the slot for the item and the current level of the item. For instance weapons cost more than bracers, or gloves. Each step costs 15 Flightstones and a few crests, with some upgrades offering discounts to reduce the cost of the Flightstones or crests that are used. Once an item is upgraded to a certain amount, it can be degraded and sold back to the upgrader for a lower amount of both currencies.

Upgraders for items can be found in many places including the main island and some outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade coupon and the possibility of obtaining an entirely new recipe. The upgrade discount increases when more items are upgraded. It can also be increased by having players complete certain achievements or complete quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an item level upgrade (Longisland`s statement on its official blog) upgrader at start, unlike Cromwell from Baldur's Gate II. Instead the NPCs that are available to facilitate upgrades must be acquired through a variety of means which is both an improvement as well as a disadvantage.

In Season 3, many new features were added to the upgrade system. After the player has upgraded to a certain item level for an armor slot, upgrading other items to the same item upgrader kit level will cost less. This is even if the items are from another set of gear.

The discount is applicable to all accounts. The amount of Harbinger Crests needed to upgrade is cut as well, but is only available when certain milestones have been reached.

Crests

The new currency system isn't complicated to use, but it will bring some changes to the process of upgrading. When a piece of equipment has reached the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer), it no longer requires Flightstones. This change is designed to allow players to get their equipment up to the highest ilvl possible on all their characters rather than relying solely on seasonal loot.

It's also essential to use crests wisely, as they are only used for one purpose. It is best to use your Whelpling-rank crests on the Best item upgrade gear you can find, and save Drake and Wyrm Crests to be used for the next set of upgrades. This is especially applicable to rings and trinkets that take up multiple slots on the character, which will only be able to benefit from the account-wide discount when all slots are full of high-quality gear.
